Climate Justice Declaration: Statement on Self-determination and Climate Justice

We, the participants of Indigenous Climate Connection (ICC), 14-20 November 2009, Sarawak, Malaysia with representation from Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Sabah (Malaysia), Nagaland Founding the conference of Climate Justice by Asia Pacific Indigenous Youth Network, collectively express our sincere appreciation to the Jarigan Tanah Hak Adat Bangsa Sarawak (TAHABAS) founding the conference of Asia Pacific Indigenous Youth Network.

Indigenous people around the world are mostly affected by the climate change, because their livelihoods are directly attached to the nature and by any outcomes of the current negotiation. Nowadays, the climate change has been a great deal of justice such as human rights, food sovereignty, natural resources, ancestral land, traditional knowledge skills, cultural integrity and wellbeing. It has been critical and sincere problems toward our livelihood, customary resources management, and ecological sustainability. It is very important of life and death for indigenous people to have the legal recognition of their rights and protection their own culture to achieve the equitable justice of the climate change.

1Therefore, we Asia-pacific indigenous youth network would like to call on all global community to respect and fulfill their current commitments as the following statements;

· The participation of IPs representative in COP 15 conference in Copenhegan to submit the issues
· Legally title the IPs land…….(.rephrase relating customary rights)
· Formation of the law and policy to support/protect the way of natural resource management and clean environment of IPs
· State must form the law and policy that encourage to the tree-plantation (1/5) and restricted forest areas.
· Provide the education to regarding consequences of Climate Change and maintaining the forest, clean environment and nature resources of their land.
· Participation in decision making in any issue regarding IPs’ natural resources management and development programs in their land regarding Local, National and global level without discrimination
· IPs must have the first right of benefit sharing from whatever negotiation are done that will be implemented in the adaptation and Mitigation strategy
· Establishment of an UN Expert group of Climate Change in IPs Issue whatever in UN mechanism that defining plan of action to reduce emissions 95% until 2050
